From the Principal’s Desk…

We can get somewhat used to, and to some extent joke about, the negative reports on Father’s dodging responsibilities when it comes to child rearing - for some of us it is an acquired skill following years of practice!!!

Well, thankfully there are still some people on our side. Here are a few quotes from various published articles to support our cause:

“My Dad was my guide for life, he was my protector and benefactor, he was my strong support when the ups and downs of life knocked me around. He taught me to respect myself and to expect more of myself than I did of anyone else. He gave me fatherly love as well as direction and discipline and he was a great example of consistency and commitment.”

A very thought provoking comment, especially if you were the dad who used a pool net to scoop up their drowning daughter instead of jumping into the water, or the one who accidentally, and I stress - accidentally wound the electric car window up whilst another daughter had her head out the window, or the one who continuously takes great delight out of the youngest child’s relatively poor artistic skills.

However, if there is any other Dad out there who doubted their importance in their children’s lives, I just love the following quote:-

“When I was….

4 - My Dad could do anything.

6 - My Dad is smarter than your Dad.

14 - Don’t pay any attention to my father. He is so old fashioned.

18 - What on earth are you wearing?

30 - Maybe we should ask dad what he thinks. After all he has had a lot of experience.

50 - I’d give anything if Dad was here now so I could talk this over with him.”

But as always the undeniable truth is expressed so well through the words of a child…..

“My Dad thinks he wears the pants in our house but it’s always Mum who tells him which pair to put on.”

On a more reflective note, the greatest legacy a person can leave in the world is not wealth, it is not a name on an honour board and it is not fame. It is an investment in the future, through loving, well-adjusted, employable and healthy children. Parents are the ultimate ‘people builders’. The solid expectations you have of your children, the skills you teach them and the values you model for them will be the building blocks of a great future.

I hope that you all had a great day on Sunday!

Thanks for reading…

Duane

Child Protection Week: Week 9

This year National Child Protection Week (Monday 4th – Friday 8th September) will continue to champion the message ‘Every child in every community needs a fair go’.  This message captures the essence of National Child Protection Week which aims to promote a safe and supported life for every child, now and into the future.  The aim of Child Protection Week is to bring together partners to focus on addressing the significant harms being experienced by children in Australia. By working collectively to change the trajectory of these children and families, we can reduce the number of children who may come in contact with the child protection system. The time to act is now.  Throughout the week, teachers will be raising awareness of Child Protection through classroom teaching and learning activities, while also addressing units from the Daniel Morcombe Safety Curriculum

God Bless,

Duane Wann

Principal

Father's Day

A reminder that this Thursday 31st August we will be holding our  Father’s Day coffee and breakfast morning commencing at 7.30am on the bottom oval. The STM P&F has engaged Caffeine Bus to serve coffee and we are also extremely lucky to have Rosie’s offer to cook bacon and egg rolls. The above won’t be available for students, only adults.  At 8.40 we will gather to celebrate Father’s Day with a Prayer Celebration led by 1 Blue in the SportsCenter. Students from Prep to Year 6 will attend and all STM families are most welcome.

As part of our celebration, we will be sharing a photo story of our amazing STM fathers and those who are like fathers to us. All St Thomas More’s families are invited to send in a maximum of two photos to be included in this photo story. All photos must be sent to Mrs Patricia Wardle via email (Patricia.Wardle@twb.catholic.edu.au) by 3.00 p.m. Wednesday 30th  August. No Photos sent in after this date will be included in the photo story.

CTJ Day

This Friday 1st August is CTJ Day. CTJ is an acronym for Consistency of Teacher Judgement which essentially means that our fabulous teachers get together for a day of professional development outside the classroom environment to build teacher capacity. STM Staff will be commencing their journey with the revised Australian Curriculum V9, understand its intent and develop teaching practices to make informed decisions about student learning.

It's a very full day of learning for our teachers. In a nutshell, Friday is a day off for students, so that the teachers can be students for a day!

God Bless.

Year 4 Touch Football Gala Day

Year 4 students will be participating in a Touch Football Gala Day on Tuesday 12th September. The gala day will be held at Kearney’s Spring Reserve, Toowoomba. The day will commence at 9:15am and conclude by 12:50pm. Children will be bused to and from the gala day within the school day. It is an expectation that all children in year 4 participate in this great opportunity. If you are able to help out with a team during the day, please contact your child’s classroom teacher. Please check the Parent Portal to give your child permission.

Interschool Sport – Friday 8th September

Last week we had a huge number of children that didn’t have a water bottle for interschool sport. Can you please support your child by ensuring they have a water and hat for sport.

If your child has chosen to play soccer, they will be required to have/wear shin guards. If your child has chosen to play rugby league, they will be required to wear a mouth guard and wear school-coloured footy shorts and socks.

Last Tuesday the Year 3 children attended a cricket gala day. The children participated in modified games of cricket against other schools. Qld cricket provided some advice and coaching throughout the day. All of the children had a great day! Congratulations to James Olive who received a bowling award at the end of the day. Well done James!

Year 6 Rugby League

On Thursday last week the senior rugby league team participated in the Wayne Beeston Cup. The boys played extremely well, only going down by one try in most games. They ended the day with a 7th/8th playoff game, which they were successful in winning. Well done boys.

God Bless,
